At SparkOptimus, we try to highlight the most important news and background stories in digital, e-commerce and retail. Here is our selection of last week’s news:
All of a sudden, a live-streaming app called Meerkat became popular. While the app announced its latest funding round this week, Twitter countered with launching their live-streaming app: Periscope. Critics, and even Hollywood stars, are taking sides which app is the best in the so-called live-streaming wars. As Fortune puts it: “the livestreaming platform you use is a statement of which team you’re on”.
Live-streaming apps have their momentum as network speed for smartphones is increasing. And we are now five years away from 5G – which is expected to be blazing fast and to transform our lives. 5G will fully replace 4G, being 100 times faster and connecting 1,000 times as many devices. To put this in perspective, with 5G you can download an HD video in mere seconds.
Not only does network speed impact our lives, Facebook is also trying to be a bigger part of it. At this week’s Facebook F8 Conference, the social network declared it wants to own every single thing you do on the internet. It is already becoming overwhelmingly unavoidable, as 40 percent of news site traffic is delivered from Zuckerberg’s creation.
It is a matter of time until Facebook will even have its own holiday. Just like Nike does.
